Written in 1952, it is considered one of Ernest Hemingway's "most enduring works". I personally would not say so but then again I have not read much of Hemingway.
The Old Man is a Cuban fisherman who has had bad luck with fishing. It had been eighty-four days without a fish. He goes into the Gulf Stream alone and he does get a large marlin; the story is a lot about that and the struggle.
The novella does tell a story of a lonely, determined old man.

I have read this book many times.Recently after so many years of experience as management executive, I read it once again. I found that book is highly instructive for students and teachers of management.The literature must find place in management curriculum. So much has been written about Hemingway and this work in particular. I doubt I'll add much value with these words. But . . . .
For me the most meaningful use of language is Santiago's change from repeatedly wishing he had the boy's youth to help in landing the big fish to the moment he loses his harpoon in defending his catch from the first shark attack. Part of him wishes he were back home in bed, "'But man is not made for defeat,' he said. 'A man can be destroyed but not defeated.'" And even w ...more
