Lily should be a character one hates and yet she's so sympathetic. I really felt for her, in her thwarted attempts to succeed in society, in her thwarted love, in her sad end. And the bit with the sense of falling asleep with the baby in her arms - that slayed me.

After a string of disappointing novels, it was refreshing to read such a good one. I was really able to relate to the main character Lily because throughout the entire book she just felt trapped. She was bored, and constantly turned down some good opportunities because she was waiting for the right one.
As the reader, I was able to see a ton of possibilities for Lily, but she was so limited in the way she saw things. The way she thought that her only solution would be A. Not A,B,C,D...etc.
