Somehow, after all this time performing in and directing Shakespeare, taking and teaching courses in Shakespeare, adoring Shakespeare, I have only managed to read Othello once. Now twice.

I recall not being a fan when I first read Othello as a teenager, which is odd since the relationship machinations should have been much more to my teen tastes than they are to my adult tastes, but what little I remember from that long ago first reading was that it was too soapy for me, too much like an episode

This play was an intense tragedy that was beautifully written by William Shakespeare. Othello is a Moorish, living in Venice, & secretly marries the lovely Desdemona. Brabantio, Venetian senator and Desdemona's father, thinks Othello must have used witchcraft to beguile his beautiful daughter. The racism is pretty strong in this book. Desdemona's father couldn't quite believe that she truly fell in love with a black man.

I knew the story since I saw the opera, but still wanted to read the actual play. I loved how Iago managed to be a decent villain and how his wife kinda saved the day. But at the end of the day I did not enjoy the play that much.

This was a pretty challenging one for me to finish, but it's been a tough year, and Othello isn't exactly light reading. Still, this play was a good exercise for my tired brain! Glad I held on and finished it. ...more
