“The Lottery” is the story that probably left me the most shocked ever (with “The Cask of Amontillado” being a close second), reading it as a young lad in high school. I’ve read it countless times since, and can say that, while I don’t particularly “enjoy” the actual story (as it is far too disturbing), it is still an impressive story in both style and theme. This story is just so well written. I absolutely love the buildup and it never gets old. The general cheeriness that is attached to the beginning that slowly slips away as they get closer to the drawing, the comments about other towns dropping their lotteries, the eagerness of the children. It’s created with such purpose.
I love the underlying theme that the Lottery is based on a long-standing, yet almost forgotten tradition resonates in so many ways. This story can be applied to a lot of facets ...more
