Jackson's short story The Lottery is absolutely brilliant. She uses every word carefully and builds tension until the last sentence.

I'm not sure why the ending seemed to come as a surprise for so many; perhaps it was the back cover description, perhaps the time, but the general idea seemed to be obvious to me, though the specifics not so much.
The story was very masterfully written, the elements well presented. The introduction feels like a general social gathering or summer fair. If I had to establish anything lacking, it would be the cause, the motivation behind the chilling turn of events. But then, perhaps the logic of 't ...more

What a chilling story! Definitely cannot tell you much without major spoilers, but it's worth reading - short and effective, served as great inspiration for many modern stories.
