This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I love how the secrets and deep lessons unravel bit by bit right until the very last page. The book grinds to an end with Sethe saying, "Me? Me?" It was as if she'd never before considered that she could be the best part of herself. This is so important because she's speaking, finally, of the one thing she had never been able to consider, care for, or focus on- herself.

This book is well worthy of its lofty reputation. It is a brutal exposition of the system of slavery that is unmatched in my reading experience. Part historical fiction, part American Gothic, this novel isn’t fun to read but is very rewarding for the serious student of literature.
