What on earth happened here? I wanted to cruise with Mr. Stevens through England, see a bit of the lovely countryside, wind up in one of my bucket list places (Cornwall) with a gasp of utter joy, and learn some life lessons along the way. A lovely book about memory, dignity, regrets, life’s purpose, and other sunny issues.

A butler faces himself, his lifetime, and the choices that led him to the end of his time. This includes his doubts regarding his employer of 30 years, who is insinuated as having Nazi sympathies, as well as doubts regarding his refusal to allow any type of outside life to intrude on his duties, in particular the love of one of his fellow servants and his rebuttal of her attempts to love him. The writer's technique is excellent, and the exploration of class, psychology, etc. was fascinating. However this is one of those very rare cases where the movie is as good or better than the book.
