I read this long, long ago, and I remembered it depressing the shit out of me when I was about ten or twelve. I've not touched it since. Even when I was supposed to write an essay about "greed" in The Pearl in grade ten, I couldn't bring myself to open the pages.

I always feel a kinship with Steinbeck as my family is from the Salinas. This short story though not taking place in the Monterey area is an astounding story of love, hope, grief and loss all subject matter that Steinbeck weaves into a wonderful read. Looking to read "Grapes of Wrath " soon

As short stories go this was good. Great prose, but a sad story. I think I liked Steinbeck's The Red Pony more.
