Even though this might not be the deepest work of fantasy any more, it is still a very impressive work of imagination, and the world-building of course is un-comparable.
The Lord of the Rings has inspired so many later writers and great works of fantasy has risen from it. This is the one work of fantasy everyone should read.

A magnificent story, told with such details of character and geographic descriptions that is quite daunting to grasp at the first read.
