This is such a problematic play for a modern non-antisemitic audience!
Shylock is cast as a devilish figure. He's a Jewish moneylender who is spit on, insulted, hated, fed pork, and otherwise mistreated. And yet when the heroes want to borrow money, they still turn to him - insulting him all the while.
What happens to him? He loans money to someone who despises him for doing so, then that person's close friend elopes with his daughter and in the process steals a good chunk of his fortune. And th ...more

I think I read all of Shakespeare’s plays in college. I remember some of them but others I don’t. This was one I didn’t remember. I was listening to a Radio Lab podcast and Robert Krulwich mentions this play and the plot of it. Sounded like I wanted to read it again and so I did. It is an interesting play with some famous lines, such as the pound of flesh that Shylock the Jew expounds on and also the Quality of Mercy speech that Portia gives.
