Young boys thinking they have figured out how to get along without grown-ups. Creating real fear from imaginary beasts; and imaginary power from a real conch shell. The boys try to organize as a single system, with the end resulting with nothing more than fighting and killing. They split into two groups who fight over power and control/use of limited resources. Lord of the Flies is a timeless allegory.

Do you really think that it would take that long for kids to devolve into murderous cults? . . . I don't.

Human beings are inherently selfish, cruel beings. Given a chance they'd take no time to slip into savagery. This book illustrates just that using an example of a bunch of boys marooned on an island.
There were some parts in the story which were gripping, horrifying even. Other than that, I was mostly bored reading the book. ...more
