I have to explain this five star rating. I did not give this novel five stars because I *enjoyed* it five-stars worth, but rather because it is written with five-stars worth of genius. Getting through this book was an absolute SLOG. Every page was challenging and it was often tediously verbose. However, the novel is a work of art. This was one long book. It was good in a lot of places, but mostly, it was a chore to finish. I lost interest halfway and took a break of several days and read other books. When I resumed reading it, my only objective was to finish it. And I did, finally.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a master of language and the story he tells here is one of all time greats and should be read by everyone.
