What Members Thought

This is my least favorite trip to the Salinas Valley with John Steinbeck so far. The only character really fleshed out is the affable, polite, and sometimes naughty, son Jody. I know he was ten but suffocating a bunch of lizards and dismembering a bird? C'mon! Each of the four chapters is a stand-alone story and none of them are resolved pleasantly. Not my favorite Steinbeck, but it has his characteristic purity and simplicity of style.
Kind of makes me wistful. The "young boy Jody" lives an idyll on the family farm in a California paradise and learns that the time of myths has ended and things don't always "turn out all right." Grownups can be wrong, and life lets you down sometimes. ...more
