The quintessential WWI book.

Told through the eyes of a 19 year old young German soldier, Paul Baumer, I was able to experience
the horrifying days of WWI, deep in the trenches on the Western Front.

And even though it was a short book, you can't come out if quite the same.

Quite possibly, the best war novel ever written.

Reading this was the closest I have felt to actually being in a war. Remarque perfectly captures the brotherhood, trauma, pain, and vice inherent in battle, and helped me (begin to) understand the conflicted feelings of a soldier on leave. Most poignant were the scenes where Paul's fellow soldiers seem to go "mad" by attempting desertion, or reacting strongly to an animal or person in pain. A graphic, up close, and stunning portrayal of the physical and mental terrors of war. Follows Paul and his fellow 19 year old comrades through the trenches of WWI. Boys who know nothing of life besides the perils of soldiering. Remarque makes a solid point that the Germans are people too. While certainly propaganda, school lessons and history books set out to make Germans the monsters, Remarque's novel reminds us that the soldiers on the evil side were merely boys as well.

In the words of Kurt Vonnegut’s bird, “Poo tee weet”. I can say nothing about this book that hasn’t been said before. It deserves its place of honor in the literary canon.
