Let's get a few things straight.

Obsession is not love.
Rape is not love making.
Stalking someone for decades on end is not a valid expression of love.
"No" is not an invitation to keep harassing someone until the "No" changes to "Yes."
Pedophilia is not the right way to go about recapturing one's youth.

Though to be fair, GGM does somewhat condemn the pedophilia (technically hebephilia), so I didn't have as much of an issue with that as with some of the other aspects - though it did firmly cement my

Enjoyed reading this book more than I thought I would. I rarely read love stories but this one of unrequited love for more than 50 years is a true gem. Magnificent writing that entrances and flow with a smoothness that is rarely written.

Shelves: classics, irritating
I'm conflicted about this one. On the one hand, the prose was very beautiful and the attention to detail in the setting, characterizations, and story was phenomenal. On the other hand, I don't really like any of the characters (particularly Florentino, who needs to be slapped repeatedly and with great force) and I don't really like the plot. It does make me curious to read some of the author's other work, but it will probably be a long while before I get around to it. ...more
