What Members Thought

I remember the first time I read this book. I was about 9 or 10 and found it on a shelf of books in the enclosed porch of my grandparent's house where I went every day after school. I remember curling up on the floor, sunshine coming through the big windows, and meeting spoiled Mary, sickly Colin and the magical Dickon inside the walls of the garden. Over fifty years later I find this story just as enchanting as that first time I read it.

This was a wonderful read. Had I read it when I was a child, I probably would have completely fallen in love with it. I did love the story, it just got a little bogged down toward the end with all the talk of "magic."

Brilliant children's book that I haven't read in a long time, I must dig it out and read it again because it's a real classic!

Though well written, the entertainment value of this book is low reading as an adult. However, the morals and themes that run through the pages make up for the lack of excitement. It's definitely a book I think everyone should read to their children.
The movie is more than slightly different from the book, but don't blame that on the movie: no one would've watched the film if it had been taken direct from the book. ...more
