Believe it or not, I had never read this book before. It was magical and enchanting and I think that everyone should read it at least once. I've grown up loving the story--I frolicked around London, when I was there for my study abroad, looking for secret gardens--and now I finally read the book. The book is a classic, and it explores themes and ideas that leave the reader feeling refreshed and happy--typical of books from this time, but nonetheless very fulfilling. Mary is orphaned in a cholera epidemic in India. She is then brought to Yorkshire to live with her uncle. Described as an ugly, sour-faced little thing with terrible manners she doesn’t really have anything to look forward to. Until she finds ‘the garden’. And Dickon. And Colin.
I had a smile on my face as I read this book and a longing in my heart to be out on the moors, ‘in the fresh air’.

This was my second time to read this. I'm reading it again for my Classical Conversations class.
Oh, how I love this book! This story is a powerful reminder of how our thoughts and attitudes can affect us, for good or ill. It is also a powerful reminder of how children can and will blossom and grow in a nurturing, loving environment.
I won't give anything away, but that last chapter just makes mincemeat of my heart.
