Trying to get into this twisty, turny, meandering book.
The beginning was well written and funny (the convict)....now I am up to the eccentric Miss Haversham and mean Estella.
Haversham pays Joe to apprentice Pip...I don't know. Are these people insane?
I realize that Dickens wrote books in installments for his public and these books are sort of soap opera-ish in that we follow the adventures of a young man who is set on a course of being a gentleman, thanks to Miss Haversham? or thanks to the con ...more

OK. So I'm really only giving this book 4.5 stars because I loved it so much and then hated the ending. There was an outcry that the original ending was too sad, but I totally disagree. Estella is the WORST! And having her be sad and depressed is what she deserved. In the changed ending it looks like Pip and Estella are reunited and happy. That just seems way too untrue to the characters. She is so frozen and terrible that he deserves much better. And then suddenly, a few years later, she's done

WOW!! Why oh why don’t we read more classics?!!
I have made it a goal to read at least one a year. Not much I know but hopefully will beat that goal.
Charles Dickens is a great storyteller and gives you an intriguing ride. To think this was written in 1859 and would make a great discussion book. Yes it is a bit long, I read some and listened to a lot on audio.
Let’s all read a few more classics.
Oh and there is a great version of Great Expectations from 2011 from PBS I think. Miss Haversham is un ...more
