This was my second read of this iconic novel. I put it on my favorites shelf the first time and it remains there upon reread. Steinbeck speaks to me. His characters are rich, textured, flawed, nuanced and real. The history and culture he writes about is of a time and place that most of us do not understand very well. This book makes me cry. On the 22nd of March 2017 I finished reading for the first time my first Steinbeck novel. On the 18th of April 2017 I finished my fifth (The Grapes of Wrath) Steinbeck novel. Each book I have loved a little more than the last, and with each one I read I love Steinbeck a little more. Truly, I am a bit obsessed. I thought I had read this years ago, but I realized I never did. The best book by far that I've read in a long time, and the message is still relevant to our economic conditions today. Loved it!
