I WAS SO SAD TO LEARN HOW LAURA AND ROBERT DIED. WHAT RIGHT DID OLIVIA HAVE IN TRYING TO PREVENT THEM FROM DATING. IT WAS NOT HER CALL, O.K I CAN SEE HOW DISAPPOINTED HER FATHER WOULD HAVE BEEN IF HE KNEW THAT LAURA HAD PREMARITAL SEX, BUT CLEARLY SHE DID NOT HAVE AN OLDER WOMEN TO WHOM SHE COULD HAVE GONE TO FOR ADVISE. HER OWN MOTHER WAS TOO SHY TO SPEAK OF ANYTHING THAT PERTAINING TO SEX. SO THE NEXT BEST THING FOR LAURA WAS TO TALK TO BELINDA.

This has always been my favorite in the series because I loved Laura, her love interest, and thought the entire story was fascinating though heartbreaking. I haven’t read this one in over fifteen years so I couldn’t remember more than the basics, though.

Laura is still my favorite of the Logans, though I could easily imagine her and Melody getting along well. She’s kind but also stands up for herself when it’s merited. I especially liked seeing he ***There will be slight SPOILERS in this review***

Laura is still my favorite of the Logans, though I could easily imagine her and Melody getting along well. She’s kind but also stands up for herself when it’s merited. I especially liked seeing her scenes with May and thought she handled her grandmother fairly well.

Robert was a great match for Laura and an overall good guy, especially in the VCA universe. I’d forgotten how funny his mother is—the scenes between her, Robert, and Laura made me laugh aloud. I could relate to Laura’s guilt when it came to sex so I felt for her and appreciated seeing that as well as Robert’s attempts to soothe those toxic feelings.

Cary is still as creeptastic as ever, though he has a few shining moments in this one—I especially liked when he told Laura he wasn’t going to let people get away with saying garbage when it came to her. Laura’s complex uneasiness concerning Cary was well crafted. I also liked seeing how much more at ease Jacob and Sara were compared to the other books.

Grandma Olivia is her usual snobby, cruel self but she really takes the cake in this one. Especially in the scene at the end. I’m dreading reading her book more and more because she’s not particularly redeemable at this point. I wish the ghostwriter had given her a different name because it feels a bit lazy considering there’s an even worse grandmother named Olivia in the V.C. Andrews world already.

I feel like this would have been even better if Laura had to slowly reveal her story from the beginning when she’s in the institution. Her romance with Robert was sweet and I felt awful for them once the storm happened.

Settings involving institutions have always intrigued me and I enjoyed reading about the one in this book, even though there is a sinister element to it. Lawrence’s character also tugged at my heartstrings. I felt bad for the other kids, too.

I knew Laura’s overall fate but couldn’t remember the details of it and while it fit the story and was extremely well written, it was hard to read. The last 25% was difficult to put down. Definitely the strongest book in the series.
