I really remembered nothing about this book. I had a few memories of the other books but this one drew a blank. We now follow Ruby's daughter Pearl. Ruby has become a famous artist and has twin sons and is so delightfully happy. Then everything starts to fall apart. Nina Jackson is dying and Ruby doesn't make it to her in time to see her. Nina had something to say and it weighs on Ruby. Then history repeats itself on a trip to the vacation home one of Ruby's son's Jean is bitten by a snake a die I really remembered nothing about this book. For someone who follows voodoo practices you'd think she wouldn't want to name her sons after her dad and uncle given how they ended up. Just asking for bad luck there. Pearl is going to medical school and is a science nerd. Unlike her mother she also has a better understanding of consent and birth control so that's an improvement. Let's not forget that Beau basically forced himself on her the first time and we're expected to believe it's a great love story. Anyway she goes through two different men, a high school boyfriend and an intern who turns out to be a horrible guy. Anyway after Jean dies Ruby goes crazy and takes off desperate to make peace with the mess she made of the past. Like treating Paul like garbage and going from a kind decent person to a selfish bitch. She actually made me like Giselle in the last book. Pearl goes to find her and find out what happened all those years ago. Buster Trahaw makes another appearance, he certainly never gives up and has a great memory for such a heavy drinker. The book is quite confusing as Pearl's friend is Catherine and her love interest is Jack. Not sure if it's supposed to be a circular thing or if they just ran out of names to use. Anyway overall not a bad story, Pearl comes out better than Annie or Christie and at least she still has both parents by the end. Ruby does realize how selfish she was throughout the last book so that's something. And now that I've finished the first four I'm ready to see how Lifetime butchered these stories. ...more
