Such a pleasure to read this poetic memoir about Woodson's girlhood. Woodson manages to create vivid images, tell a story, and elicit great feeling all through spare, precise writing. Her window on African American community and her own neighborhoods, along with her evolution to loving words and writing are well worth the read.

I really enjoyed Woodson's poetic memoir. She made her childhood in the South really come alive and gave me new perspective on the Civil Rights movement.
