I loved this book! What a treat. I thought I was in for another WWII novel (not a bad thing but there seem to be so many of them) and this is one with a twist--spies, but with the sharp and witty style of Kate Atkinson, who turns a dire time into something of a wild and funny caper on the side. It's all due to Juliet Armstrong, the irreverent, world-weary protagonist. Atkinson has an absolute romp with words in this and I totally enjoyed it. Women take a front seat here. Once-a-librarian
A transcriptionist becomes a British MI5 double agent during WW2. I liked the story, even Juliette’s constant interior dialog, but I never felt really immersed. It’s a complicated piece of historical fiction and was hard to follow in the listening mode as I usually borrow audiobooks. The reader was great but I needed to pay closer attention, I think, to get the most out of this one.
