[close] Beckman's quirky novels were flying off shelves this summer on Martha's Vineyard. I had read a A Man Called Ove a while back and so took a second look at his other novels. Like Ove, Britt Marie is an unusual and very odd person who the reader comes to adore as she takes on the town of Borg at a desolate time in her life. There are many moments of hilarity here as we cheer on this preposterous heroine.

Beckman's writes convincingly of small towns and the ordinary people whose lives and struggles we come to care about. Small neighborhoods, narrow spheres of life, people of little or modest means are Beckman's subjects--launching pads for a look at human virtues and deficits and stories of hope and salvation from grief, loss, change, sadness and disillusionment.
