[close] Lincoln in the Bardo is set mostly in the period after Willie Lincoln passes away from typhoid in the "bardo" a type of limbo between living and death. Saunders employs a slew of ghosts who share their memories about life (many don't realize they are dead), observations of a grieving Abraham Lincoln and plans to help the young child pass on. It took me a little while to get past the unusual style, which is set like a play and also employs primary historical texts, but afterward I became deeply invested. I appreciated how Saunders even considered elements of social class, race, sexuality and gender in the bardo.
