Lincoln in the Bardo is set mostly in the period after Willie Lincoln passes away from typhoid in the "bardo" a type of limbo between living and death. Saunders employs a slew of ghosts who share their memories about life (many don't realize they are dead), observations of a grieving Abraham Lincoln and plans to help the young child pass on. This is my favorite audiobook of 2017. The wit, the pathos of the performance is amazing! It wasn’t easy to get started - I tried a few times- and just when I was about to give up, everything clicked. The format is so different but it really works. The section/chapter/solilquy “What was done to her” is the most heart-rending piece I’ve come across in a long time. Beautiful work.
