Many of the characters in these stories made me flinch. I didn’t relate or disliked them. The author is a powerful writer to provoke that feeling, but I was glad when the book was over. The narrators voice multiplied that reaction and was the main reason I did not finish the audiobook version of “Lucy Barton” (to whom these stories link.) Strout’s stories remind me of Eudora Welty’s writing which I love so, next time, I will read the book instead of listening.

Wonderful read. Strout takes a range of fully conceived characters and beautifully gives voice to their unarticulated or inchoate often tender emotions that define their lives. It's also a pleasure to connect the dots between characters and their relationships in this community. ...more
