Ho-ly Sh*t

Ok, so the best way I can personally describe it is by creating a mash-up of movies. Hopefully this will describe the awesomeness without giving away everything.

Take a healthy dose of 28 Days Later, mix with equal parts Event Horizon and set aside. In another bowl, combine 2010: A Space Odyssey, a splash of Ender's Game, a pinch of Independence Day and a healthy scoop of Hackers. Bring both mixtures together and bring to a boil. Strain out any crappy fillers and ridiculousness plots.

4.5 out of 5 stars

I'd never read anything like Illuminae before. Written as a dossier – with emails, instant messages, schematics, video surveillance transcripts, etc. – instead of prose, the format of this novel is innovative and flat-out gorgeous. While it took me about 20 pages to become comfortable with the style, once I did, I loved it. This is one of the few novels that I would recommend reading in hardcover.

When you take away the stylistic formatting, Illuminae loses a little bit of steam

Illuminae is diferent than everything I've read before and the format of treading the narrative on a group of secrets file gave me an experience similar to video-games. Just for that the book was worth it. I give an applause for the effort that took to put together a book like this.

The fact that the story centers around space, sci-fi, faceless corporations, AI with a dash of intrigue also helped the case. Kady's story eventually becomes bigger than her but she never stopped playing a major role
