Ho-ly Sh*t
Ok, so the best way I can personally describe it is by creating a mash-up of movies. Hopefully this will describe the awesomeness without giving away everything.
Take a healthy dose of 28 Days Later, mix with equal parts Event Horizon and set aside. In another bowl, combine 2010: A Space Odyssey, a splash of Ender's Game, a pinch of Independence Day and a healthy scoop of Hackers. Bring both mixtures together and bring to a boil. I'd never read anything like Illuminae before. Written as a dossier – with emails, instant messages, schematics, video surveillance transcripts, etc. – instead of prose, the format of this novel is innovative and flat-out gorgeous.
