I really enjoyed this novel and have already started its sequel. Schwab's characters are fun and engaging, and the fantasy world she creates is unique and original, which is a quality hard to find in a lot of the fantasy literature being written today. The pacing of the story is perfect, always leaving the reader wanting more, and Schwab does an excellent job of avoiding fantasy cliches, instead taking her characters in new and surprising directions. I look forward to reading more from this auth ...more

A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC has that unique kind of ability where it pulls you in and keeps you on the edge of the seat for the entire time and leaves you wanting more once it's finished. The magic system is one of the best I have read in a long time and if anyone asks me for a fantasy recommendation, this will be the first one off my tongue. Can February come a little faster so I can have A Gathering of Shadows, please and thank you?

There is so much good in this one that I don't even know where to

This review is so incredibly overdue. I took a long time actually reading A Darker Shade of Magic and then even longer to write this post. After reading Vicious and everyone raving about this book I was so excited to finally read it. I was expecting layered characters, wonderful world building and a story that would sweep me away and surprise me at every turn.

A Darker Shade of Magic delivers, on most part. The world building is amazing, I

Finally, I finished this one and it ended up with 3.5 for me. I expect to rate this book higher (at least above 4) - it's about magic, alternate world, and fantasy - what else I could ask for?

But it took me months to finally finished this book. I even need to put it down a couple of times and try to read it again from the start. I need extra effort fo to push myself to finished it. The hard part especially in the middle of the book. There is some scene that is not related to the main characters

I think it’s probably a better book than 3 stars, but I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention. But then again if it failed to hold me maybe that says something. Idk. I did quite like the characters of Lila and Kell, and the premise of the different Londons was interesting, I just lost track of the plot a bit. I have the rest of the series so I’ll carry on anyway (after a Fourth Wing break cos my library loan is about to expire), and maybe book 2 will grab me.
