First, I will admit to a love of Julia Quinn's books. Her world of Bridgertons and Smythe-Smiths is a delightful one.
I enjoyed this book very much. I started with trepidation because I had read a review (note to self: Stop doing that BEFORE you read.)that mentioned the unlikeability of both the heroine and hero. That reviewer was wrong. Sarah and Hugh are not unlikable, they are just two prickly characters who need to smooth out a little, which they do over the course of the book.

This is the most disappointing Julia Quinn novel I've read. I had a hard time getting into the story, her trademark humour and clever dialogue were missing, and the plot was borderline absurd. I once complimented Mary Balogh for one of her novels "because no one was kidnapped, thrown from a horse, endangered at sea, caught in a compromising situation, challenged to a duel or took on another person's identity as a plot device". Normally, I feel the same way about Julia Quinn. For me, the heart of

Julia Quinn is always able to stuck me into her books from page one. It never fails. I really love Hugh's and Sarah's banter they had throughout the book. Enjoyable and quick read!

I truly loved this tale. How could I not? This is romance in its purest form. Two people, Sarah and Hugh, are thrown together at a wedding. He has an injury to a leg involving a duel with Sarah's cousin and has a pronounced limp. She hates him and he hates himself. The duel was his fault and he actually shot her cousin without meaning to. Her cousin shot him too unintentionally and almost killed him. Hugh has spent his lifetime punishing himself especially because his father went out for revenge

I consider Julia Quinn a must-read, must-buy author. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, #3 in the Smythe-Smith Quartet of books.
2015 addition: A splendid example of a well-done enemies to lovers story. Quinn really takes us into the backstory of the hero and the complete history of the duel which formed the backdrop for all three of the novels so far in the quartet. And for a man tortured by pain and the knowledge of how much he has lost in his own eyes and the eyes of Society, seeing him fall in ...more

I really liked this, but the problem I have with it came at the end. Even as I write this months later, I'm not exactly sure what happened at the end, and I'm not sure why we needed that end. (view spoiler)
