Review from 2013
C for narration/C for content
I found this rather a difficult book to rate, because it’s quite unlike most of the other historical romances I’ve read or listened to. At times, I almost forgot I was listening to a romance because there were so many uncomfortable moments that made it almost too realistic to be termed a romance.
That’s not to be taken as a damning criticism, however. I think that Ms. James has touched on something in Once Upon a Tower, which is actually very honest an ...more

This was a wonderful read.
I just loved how Gowan was so orderly & logical but took one look at Edie.....and that was it. He knew she was the one & was not going to mess around with courting her but claim her right away!
Then to find out poor Edie didn't even remember him & now is betrothed to him, was too funny! They have many surprises ahead of them as they get to know each other & expand their thinking.

Eloisa James is, in my opinion, one of the best, smartest writers around. She makes me proud to be a reader of romance novels. Which is why I'll refrain from venting any feelings of disappointment. I can't expect a favorite author to hit a home run every time. I noticed in her last few books that she is trying out different things (for want of a better word in my limited vocabulary) and that's always good for any writer, I think. Oftentimes, many established romance writers get stuck in a rut an

Sometimes what we think we want and what really need are not quite the same thing. Eloisa James brings us another wonderful twist on a fairy tale with the story of Gowan and Edie. I have read all of Eloisa James' books and this is her at her finest!

16 days is the longest it has ever taken me to finish a Eloisa James book and I have read each and everyone of them. This was a decent romance but the regency part was clearly missing. The fairy tale part was quite forced as well. It seems Author could have easily written this for any arranged marriage couple and the fact that the hero in the book was a duke was completely irrelevant. First time ever in Eloisa James books I didn't even remember that the female lead was actually a duchess. I woul

I was apprehensive about this book as I have not liked an Eloisa James book since Beauty Tamed the Beast. However, this book is amazing! It has heart, sensuality, great characters that you feel for, poetry, and a castle! I was really pulling for Gowan and Edie to work this out because you could tell in the pages that they really loved each other, but just had a lot of (incorrect) expectations based on their upbringing.

eh, it was charming in most of the story. I was underwhelmed by the "problem" they were having but it was what it was.
