I stayed up until 1:30 am this morning to finish Once Upon A Tower, Eloisa James' retelling of the fairytale Rapunzel.
Tower held my attention and I loved how James wove in snippets from Shakespeare and included classic musical pieces throughout the novel.
I enjoyed the letter writing between our hero Gowan, the Duke of Kinross and Lady Edith our heroine which take place in chapter five. The letters give the reader a hint of the main character's personalities and the story ahead.

I started out loving this series (I am a big fan of Eloisa James). I very much liked the books, until I read the last one. Ugh - I really didn't like that! Still, I started reading this the day it was published to give her the benefit of the doubt. Well...I was better, but not by much. Where was the humor? Where were the lovable characters? Where was the handsome lead who you just want to fall in love with? That whole bit about - oh I get really angry and yell and then people hide from me foresh

Another fabulous fairy tale from EJ. Don't know how she still wows me after so many great reads but she does. Loved it!

A captivating story, characters who are heartbreakingly young and real, and prose so gorgeous you can hear music—Once Upon a Tower, a blend of Rapunzel, Romeo and Juliet, and the storytelling gifts that are uniquely Eloisa James, has them all. This just may be James’s best book yet. If you love historical romance set in the timeless world of fairy tales that will bring a tear to your eye, a smile to your lips, and leave you rejoicing that you are a romance reader, you don’t want to miss this one

Think 1824 Scottish Romeo and Juliet meets English Rapunzel with a large dose of cello.
We have a hero, Gowan Duke of Kinross, and a heroine, Edie daughter of the Earl of Gilchrist, who are both driven, he by duty, she by music. Both are innocents in sexual AND social matters.
There is an amazing supporting cast: her step-mother Layla, his half-sister Susannah, some of Julia Quinn's Symthe-Smith clan, his majordomo Bardolph. And we have The Tower.

I've read everything written by Eloisa James and, for my money, ONCE UPON A TOWER ranks as one of her best. With humor, heart and exquisite prose, Ms. James takes the reader along on the journey of a young couple who meet, marry and begin to fall in love without really knowing one another. It will take growth, compromise and understanding on both their parts to overcome the inevitable obstacles, as well as put the past to rest, before they can move forward as a couple and achieve their happy eve

Eloisa James's fairy tale series has been pretty hit or miss for me, but this one was definitely a hit. Call me a contrarian, but I am a sucker for a love story in which the sex is not amazingly, multi-orgasmically perfect first time, every time. It's much more interesting when things are a little bit more real and they actually have to work for it. This story gives us what happens after the couple rides off into the sunset and shows the effort required for a happily ever after. Fun cam ...more

Again the author writes a clever story an loosely relates it to a fairy tale, this time Rapunzel! I gave this a 4 out of 5 because there were some parts where I found the pace to slow down an I wasn't sure of the direction the story was going. I guess it didn't flow seamlessly like some of the other books by this author. It's still a fabulous romance and good story. I particularly like how the couple isn't a perfect fit an have to work out their issues.

This book started great and then petered out for me. I started reading it and then just couldn't finish it after 250 pages. I think I'm going to need to try this one again in a month or so. See if it was just this week or if it's just this book.
