This was quite an emotionally complex story. Our heroine, Sidonie, shows up at the country estate of our hero, Jonas, to satisfy a debt incurred by her sister at a gaming table to spend seven nights in his bed. Sidonie is a spinster by choice and, of course, a virgin. Her sister, Roberta, is married to Jonas's cousin, William, who is the viscount. 3 ½-4 stars – Historical Romance

I read romance fiction because I can trust in the happy ending. At the same time, the books that I find most compelling are those that make me believe for a few holding-my-breath moments that there is no way the hero and heroine can overcome the obstacles and win their HEA. Campbell gave me these moments in this book. I loved Sidonie and Jonas, flaws and all. I believed in their love for one another, and I thought they deserved one another. If I had to rate this book by the first 336 pages, I'd give it 5 stars. But, the last 50 pages really detract from the story when suddenly the hero, Jonas, decides he can't trust Sidonie anymore and REFUSES TO CHANGE HIS MIND. So, for me, I'm going to pretend the story actually ends right after the Newgate scene when (in my mind) Sidonie asks for forgiveness, Jonas tells her he has already forgiven her as she had good reasons for her deception, and then... The epilogue ends the story.
