3 stars – Historical/Regency Romance

I had the great pleasure of discovering Julia Quinn through her sister before her first book was in print. I eagerly anticipate each release... and What Happens in London didn't disappoint for one moment.
JQ writes characters with life experiences that are easily recognizable by modern readers (loss of a parent too soon, stuttering, alcohol issues, etc.) I love the stories where the hero is equally or even slightly more central to the plot than the heroine.

Told that her new neighbor may have killed his fiancee, Olivia Bevelstoke doesn't believe it, but her interest is caught and she stakes out a spot near her bedroom window, cleverly concealed by curtains, she watches, and waits and discovers that the intriguing man next door is definitely up to something.
While he's had all the training, Sir Harry Valentine is no hands-on spy. He works for the boring branch of the War Office, translating documents vital to national security. It's not hard for him ...more

A quintessential Quinn, frothy and entertaining but never shallow. After reading several hot contemporaries lately, it was so nice to read a book where the story wasn't just something to hang the sex scenes on.

I really enjoyed the story line a lot. I loved how it was laid out and the pace. The romance is entertaining and the mystery kept me turning pages at a very fast pace. I loved all the characters and can't wait to read about Sebastian. I didn't read the first in this series, but I will do so very soon! I hadn't realized it was a series when I read the story but was secretly hoping it was as I was reading. Julia Quinn is definitely one of my historical romance all time favorite writers!

I just finished it and I loved the whole thing, except it felt a tiny bit rushed at the end. I thought it needed another chapter at the end, before the proposal scene and to help the wrap up. the characters -- even the secondary characters -- were engaging, likable, and well-rounded. The dialogue was brilliant!!! I anxiously await her next book!

Next-door neighbors Olivia and Sir Harry Valentine have a romance going via their windows. It's complicated by a Russian prince, Harry's job at the War Office, and a wretched gothic romance. Who know there'd be so much fun in being pecked to death by pigeons!
