Sayre,who is the main character of this book, was very angry and disillusioned by her father and brother(s)~she'd had enough of them and moved as far away as she could. 10 yrs later she gets word that her youngest brother~Danny~has died. This is why she decides to go back home~just one more time,to go to her brother's funeral. Danny had committed suicide. Or did he? It becomes clear that suicide couldn't be it,so homicide it is. But who did him in? From here on out,keep it in your mind that like Sayre,who is the main character of this book, was very angry and disillusioned by her father and brother(s)~she'd had enough of them and moved as far away as she could. 10 yrs later she gets word that her youngest brother~Danny~has died. But who did him in? From here on out,keep it in your mind that like Danny's death,not everything appears as it is at first. You find out about what happened in her father's past that makes him as is. None of his children call him "Father",much less "Dad". They call him by his name "Huff". That should give you a bit of a clue as to what kind of character he is. Sayre's only surviving brother,Chris,is very much like his father. And then there is Beck Merchant. Beck is the family's fix-it-all guy. They need someone like that because Huff Hoyle is a very rich man,and owns and operates the only main business in the area. The people of the town depend on their jobs,their livelihood being employed at "Hoyle Enterprises". But Huff? Their Boss? Really could care less about them. And the employees and the town find out how much he really cares (not!),when the government swoops down to close up his shop due to all the injuries,deaths,etc. that have happened there due to unsafe practices that have gone on there. As Huff begins to see his own business/livelihood start to fall apart at the seams,is when everything else comes to light-things that as I said in the beginning,do not appear as one first thought. Twists & turns all at the end and at almost every turn. The book has everything in it that one could possibly want. A sordid past,a mysterious present,there is love and lust,murder,mayhem,twists & turns and yet.........
My honest opinion? I thought it was a whole lot of book,that in the end,is not going to stick in my mind for long. Sorry,it wasn't all that great of a story or book to me~the ending,didn't even surprise me all that much. Maybe if the book was written differently the ending would've not only have surprised me,but maybe even have shocked me.
