Be prepared to be enamored within the first couple of pages that you read. Kelly did not hold back when she wrote her Debut novel, she brings her A-game. The book brings something new to the paranormal world. The storyline is grand. This book has all the supernatural elements you are a fan of in other books but written in a manner that has not been written before. The Greek mythology is a perfect blend to go along with a futuristic New Orleans. Kelly wrote each characters flawless. One thing thats very important to me when I read a new book or series is, are the characters memorable? Yes they are in Darkness becomes her.

I will give as much as I can without spoiling the book. Picture New Orleans in the future after 2 massive Hurricanes ruin what you know today as New Orleans. The United States doesn't even consider it part of the country anymore. A group of wealthy families buy New Orleans and change the name to New 2. We are introduced to Ari she considers her self very strange. It might be due to the fact that she has white hair and teal eyes, did I mention if she cuts her hair it reappears again. Ari wants to know more of her past such as her mother since sh has been in foster care practically all her life. She finds a message from her mom, its real simple. RUN! well I can tell you Ari runs but right to the place her mother meant for her to stay away from New 2. On this trip she comes across what the books calls misfits. They began to help Ari in her journey to discover her past and possibly who or what she is. The oldest on the group is named Sebastian, it turns out Sebastian is more than what meets the eyes. Sebastian and the rest show Ari she is not alone in being different, New 2 is a haven for the different. Ari then begins to discover her part and what she finds out is not something you can swallow down easily, will her new friends stick by her side? On February 22nd go to the book store and pick up your copy to find out. You will not be disappointed.

I made the big mistake about starting this book at the hair salon. Once the lady got to me I could not put down the book. Ari knows something is different about her. She feels it in her bones. She goes looking for her mother in search for answers. But what she finds is so much more than that. More than she ever though she find out.

I loved Ari. Her character, her anger towards her mother felt real. She is genuine teenager with lots of secrets, hurt, anger, betrayal that just needs to be answered. ...more

Like most teens, she does exactly what her mother tells her not to do and decides to go there all while being hunted down for some unknown reason. She hopes to find more answers since she was born there. Maybe even figure out who her father was. The problem is New 2 is not like other places. It's dangerous and full of things that can't be explained.

Upon arriving in New 2, she makes some strange friends that seem to be bordering on the paranormal side. I thought they were totally awesome characters that I found myself wanting to read more about. She also meets this super fine lookin' guy, Sebastian. Even the name is sexy. Say it out loud once and tell me you don't agree... "Sebastian." Yeah, just like I thought. Anyway, he decides to help Ari try to figure out her mystery. This is where the romance comes in just in case it wasn't obvious. The romance seemed a bit rushed but I still loved it.

Ari starts getting these intense headaches and the New 2 council wants to meet with her. She doesn't know who to trust or who the "bad guy" even is. Soon it becomes a question of figuring out what she is but something is happening to her and she is running out of time so she better figure it out fast.

Once I figured out who the bad guy was and pieced together a clue about her mother, it was fairly obvious what Ari was but I thought the story was awesomely written and decently paced. I found the beginning a bit slow but it picked up and got better with each page. I enjoyed the balance of romance, greek mythology and other paranormal aspects of this novel. Just warning you now that Kelly Keaton wasn't afraid to have her characters cuss like most normal teens do. I'm not saying it's a great habit to have but it's definitely more realistic and it didn't bother me at all.

This is a great first novel of a series and I would definitely read more. The ending left some loose threads that I need to know more about so I can't wait for the sequel! Darkness Becomes Her is worth a read and comes out February 22nd, 2011. ...more

I love mythology, and any book that features mythology in it is an easy sell for me. Darkness Become Her definitely falls in that category and for good reason. Keaton offers readers a world filled with otherworldly creatures in a setting that is almost realistic. DBH offers vampires, witches, mythological Gods, and so much more to liven up New 2. New 2 is what is left of New Orleans after Katrina.

Darkness Becomes Her is the Kelly Keaton's YA debut. This book is the first in her Gods & Monsters Series. It's an intoxicating mixture of Greek myth and folk legend with a healthy dose of the magic that only New Orleans can provide.
