Way before Meyer hit the book lists we had L.J. Smith and her colorful cast of otherworldly characters. I am still not an Elena fan, I like her friends more than her. What makes this series worth reading is the storyline and interactions of the Salvatore brothers, the brooding Stefan and playboy Damen.
