Honestly, I was predisposed not to like the book before reading it. Bree was such an uninteresting character to me, and was apt to offer so little new insight into the Cullens, that I frankly didn't care enough about her story to want to know more about her. But, as I've devoted so much time and interest to the Twilight universe, I figured, why not give it a go?

The writing started off rough for me. I've ne I wasn't going to buy this book, but my husband bought it for me. And I do love the cover. Honestly, I was predisposed not to like the book before reading it. Bree was such an uninteresting character to me, and was apt to offer so little new insight into the Cullens, that I frankly didn't care enough about her story to want to know more about her. But, as I've devoted so much time and interest to the Twilight universe, I figured, why not give it a go?

The writing started off rough for me. I've never been a big critic of Meyer's writing, although I don't think it's stellar. But there were sentences that made me stumble and threw me out of the story way too often in the first 5-10 pages alone. One sentence I had to reread three times, and then I read it to my husband to confirm he understood it the same way I did. Writing mechanics issues lessened for me as the book progressed, but I remained surprised that a more careful edit had apparently not occurred. Then again, we Twilight fans are loyal enough we'd buy anything SM wrote, no matter how good.

Reading Bree's story unfortunately did little to increase my interest in her as a character. There were interesting moments--like her evolving relationship with Fred, who was by far the most intriguing character in the book. So, of course, he was almost completely ignored. Diego had potential as a character, but it wasn't really developed for me. Neither was the romantic chemistry between Bree and Diego. The most interesting revelation in the book was that the Volturi not only knew about (which we suspected from Eclipse) but actually colluded with Victoria's plans (which we learn in SSLBT). The most interesting pages in the book, not surprisingly, were the final few in which we see the Cullens through Bree's eyes. Her most interesting moments as a character were when she was specifically thinking about what she knew of Victoria and the Volturi, so Edward would hear it, before they killed her.

But this raises a potential consistency issue for me in Breaking Dawn. If they knew in Eclipse (and we're assuming Edward would've told everyone, though we never actually see him do it in Eclipse or Breaking Dawn) that the Volturi essentially helped Victoria attack them, why wouldn't they be more defensive/prepared/strategic/etc. in Breaking Dawn? They are surprised when Alice reveals the Volturi are going to attack, and that they've used Renesmee's existence as an excuse. But, if they KNEW the Volturi condoned/helped Victoria just several months before, they not only shouldn't have been surprised, they should've been planning to deal with it or heading it off in some other way. A similar consistency issue arises for me with Fred, also. Bree thinks about him in front of Edward, thinks about how she hoped he got away from Victoria's army and made it to Canada safely. And Edward never says anything in Eclipse when he learns a newborn vampire specifically made to kill Bella is roaming not too far off in Canada? Of course, these potential internal consistency issues arose because SM hadn't thought of these plot and character points (presumably) until after Eclipse and Breaking Dawn were published. But to me these were the kinds of questions you'd get from your critique partner. They just left the book feeling less thought-out than I would've liked, particularly as I did enjoy the series so.

Others may feel differently, but I wouldn't be surprised to find a better written and more compelling fan fiction treatment of Bree's story...

Oh, and, seriously? We've had Bella's POV, Jacob's POV, and now Bree's POV? But no Edward?! As a famous online slide show using images of Rob Pattinson to depict him supposedly telling the story of Breaking Dawn said, "I'm Edward freaking Cullen. Don't I get a point of view?" ...more

'The short second life of Bree Tanner' is an Eclipse novella and follows the story of Bree, a three month old vampire caught up in something that she doesn't understand. The war between Victoria and the Cullen family is drawing closer and an army is being made, even though the vampires are far from away of this fact. All of the new 'newborns' live together in a grotty house and take it in turns to go out hunting but even though she is thirsty a lot, Bree just wants to keep her head down and not 'The short second life of Bree Tanner' is an Eclipse novella and follows the story of Bree, a three month old vampire caught up in something that she doesn't understand. Out on a night hunting, the vampires Bree is sent out with are determined to do what they like but Bree has other ideas. When Diego, a slightly older vampire turns out, she decides to leave with him to save herself getting in trouble and the pair quickly become friends. After having to spend some time in an underwater cave, thinking that the sun will kill them, they realise that they don't know everything there is about being a vampire. It seems that their leader has been lying to them and if he would lie about the sun, what else has he been keeping from them. Bree and Diego decide to team up and figure out what is going on but time is not on their side as the war is quickly moved forward.

Even though Bree was on the bad side of the vampires, I couldn't help but like her from the very start. It was clear that she wasn't like the others and the best way that I can describe it is by saying that she had more humanity although that is not technically true. It was easy to see that she didn't want to go around killing as many as possible and that she believed in sticking to the rules that she had been taught. Some might say that this could just be obeying orders but some of the other vampires were out of control and this was something that Bree never showed.

What I really loved about her was that she just didn't seem as evil and blood thirsty as the others which was made more visible when Diego befriended Bree. Unless you knew that they were vampires, you would have just thought that they were only really good friends. Their banter and jokes made the story much lighter than it could have been, making it a more enjoyable read for me.

Even though I really enjoyed learning about Bree, Diego and their relationship, I also enjoyed the action and excitement. Knowing which side Bree was on made me wonder how gory this book was going to be so I was glad that it wasn't overdone. It was great to see Stephanie Meyer's take on the 'real' vampires compared with the Cullens. After spending so long writing about 'vegetarians', Meyer did a fantastic job of making the army, their thirst and characteristics come to life.

The lead up to the war and the newborns serving their purpose was so exciting to read, knowing where things were going to go. Once the newborns knew that they had people to take out, it all got quite animalistic with them showing their excitement and thirst. It was actually quite scary to think of 20ish newborns out on a rampage to kill one poor little human (although I hate Bella and would probably have wanted to see her die!). The excitement in this novella was much better than in Eclipse and made up for a lot of what had been missing before.

This book is no where near the length of any of the Twilight Saga but for me, the length was perfect. Meyer gave me everything that I wanted to know about Bree and the army that was missing from Eclipse and added in a little romance and humour at the same time. I managed to read this in only a couple of hours on a train to Nottingham and it made my journey much more enjoyable than normal.

I know people are going to be comparing this to the Twilight Saga but they really shouldn't because it is quite different. I would love to read this story from Diego's point of view so here's hoping that we get
another novella from Ms Meyer in the not too distant future.

I was super excited to have this book in my hands, but unfortunately it was not all that I expected. The book was set in Bree Tanner's point of view. We learned that she new born vampire, created to kill Bella. The other newborns around her don't know much either, but Bree is quickly catching on.

i really enjoyed this short story of one of the least know Twilight saga (Eclipse only) characters.
to read the first few pages by Stephanie, you get a great feel for why it was Bree's story to come more to life on the page. i really enjoyed hearing more about the newborn POV and what becoming an army was like. as we all know how Bree's story ends, i didnt think i could be all that moved by the ending, yet i still was. another great offering by Ms. Meyer!! ...more
