Stiva Oblonsky, an affable and slightly clueless aristocrat, has been caught cheating by his wife Dolly, and brings in his urbane married sister Anna to reconcile them. I’m not really sure why this book was called Anna Karenina-- this book was only marginally about her and her self destructive behaviors. To me, the book was much more about the character Levin, who felt much more interesting.

It’s a long story, that doesn’t really go very far, inspecting the characters and their choices. It was good but not great and unfortunately ended in a religious fervor congruent with its time.

1863. Has had a special interest to me since using a selection for declamation in high school. The recent P&V translation seems very good. I also have the CDs in an earlier translation. Participated in an online discussion February-March 2008, using the CDs and still another translation.
