Tolstoy and I might differ on some opinions about education, women, or urbanization, but I have to give it to him in human psyche department. If you're scared of Anna Karenina, don't be. It's one of the easiest classics I've read, but it takes patience due to sheer volume. Tolstoy liked to talk, obviously, and sometimes he dragged out a topic for a few chapters too many, which made it an uneven narrative for me. What could I possibly say that hasn't already been said? This book explores so many aspects of what it means to be human and the characters are so complex and real that it is difficult to write anything new or original. This was my first Tolstoy and whilst I won't be rushing into another just yet I will definitely get around to reading them sometime. ...more

I admit I didn't expect to like this, as I hadn't much enjoyed the other Russians I've read, but rather than being grandiose and overbearing morality, the beauty of this piece is the humanity of small moments: the stupidity and wonder of a new marriage, the conflicting emotions and suffering accompanying the convalescence and death of a loved one, the small slights which can be fostered into mad self-harm and suicide.
