I thought the ending was rather rushed and, consequently, disappointing, but the first part of the novel, depicting the conditions in which Manchester mill workers & their families lived and worken in the 19th century was very interesting indeed.I do think it might have been better hqad Elizabeth Gaskell kept the focus on John Barton, rather than bringing in the romantic element relating to Mary & her suitors!

This is an early Gaskell so not as accomplished as North and South but it still raises some important ideas about class and the plight of women and it is very readable.
