Although I never read Heidi as a child, I do have fond memories of watching the movie and miniseries versions. That said, there were still plenty of differences and surprises to discover in the text.
This is a very sweet story, but I never found it to be too cloying or saccharine. It was also much funnier in parts than I had expected; I especially loved the servants and all the chaos Heidi caused while staying in Frankfurt.

We were in Switzerland this summer and went into a souvenir shop with a basement bookshop in Zermatt. They had an entire island display of different versions of Heidi, from classic to picture book. I incorrectly remembered it as being set in Austria, so was somewhat perplexed. I read a library copy as a child and spent time imagining myself as being light-footed as a mountain goat, running down the cliff slope at the end of the road (instead of the rather clumsy, flat-footed child I was).
