What Members Thought

I am torn as to what rating I should give this one. Three stars as a document of its time (thus if you are reading it to study the abolitionist movement, you would appreciate it) and two stars as a literary document. It is not good literature, though there are a few fun parts if you enjoy Victorian wordiness, like I do. "Come, Aunty, shear the sheep!" was thus funny to me.

Coliba unchiului Tom este o carte pe care mi-o doream să o citesc de ani buni. Acum că am avut ocazia să o citesc, vreau să împărtășesc cu voi impresiile despre această minunată carte. Trebuie să recunosc că mă așteptam la altceva, la un final mai puțin tragic și la mai multă energie emanată de carte.

I thought it would never end, but it was much better than I expected. The character of Augustine St. Clare reminded me a great deal of Jason Compson (Quentin's father, not his brother), even to the extent that I wonder whether Faulkner wasn't in part inspired...
