A very odd book and not in the same league with Jane Eyre, in my opinion. This is reputedly the most autobiographical of Charlotte Brontës works and paradoxically one in which the heroine is held at a distance from the reader. Lucy Snowe is burdened by overwhelming sadness and isolation but leaves the reasons for her woes to the imagination of the reader. After awhile, I began to think that she was overdoing the self-pity.
