Here's a novel I would have loved to love. David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas" has a scope, structure and boldness for linguistic experimentation that baffles in its ambition. It's a jigsaw puzzle of narrative layers within layers, a mash-up of genres, styles, tones and vocabularies.

Well-written, intelligent, but a little too precious for its own good. "Cloud Atlas" is like 6 novellas loosely bound together. Each is written in a different literary style, which helped to evoke the flavor of a different era but also made it come across as a tad disjointed and, frankly, overly clever. My favorite part was the dystopian "An Orison of Sonmi-451", which I would have loved to see stand alone as its own work.
