Orson Scott Card talks a lot in his How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy about exposition, and about how science fiction and fantasy readers react to it with different expectations than non-genre readers. While suffering some clear first novel problems, this book remains remarkable. The world is interesting, the ideas are fascinating and the plot draws you in. When the parts align, there are characters that speak clearly in unique voices - and with rare authenticity.
