I liked this pretty much exactly as much as I expected. I loved the writing style, poetic without being overburdened, the cultural descriptions, the cosmology, and some of the secondary characters. Sieh, in particular, stole the show for me. Neither Yeine nor Nahadoth did much for me, alas, and the politics never came across as subtle as I think they were supposed to be. But both were well-worth dealing with to have a chance to explore Jemisin's world.

Shelves: lgbtq, fantasy
Combine the mysticism of Storm Constantine's Wraeththu series with the court intrigue of Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy books, and you'll start to get a picture of "The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms". And while it doesn't quite reach the heights of either Constantine's or Carey's works, it definitely stands on its own merits as a fantasy book. I asked zvi for some scifi/fantasy that didn't have skeevy unexamined sexism on the part of the (usually male) author -- which rules out nearly 80% of the scifi/fantasy canon. This is what she gave me. It is very original and was a joy to read. I may suggest it for book club, although that would mean I would actually have to talk at book club (the horror!). ...more

First pure fantasy book I've read in---a startlingly long time. Taking me a bit to get back into the conventions, but it's worthwhile.

Okay, I did like it, but the ending threw me a bit. It was good, readable, interesting, but just didn't quite make the jump from "good" to "great" for me. Possibly my standards are too high.
