The writing here is lovely, from smooth-flowing description to sharply observed dialogue, but there's just not enough there there for me to give it a four-star rating. Probably this is a reader/book mismatch; horror isn't my genre. But I do think it would have been a stronger work at half the length. Still, I will happily pick up more books by Jackson, because can that woman ever turn a sentence.
