Betty has a lot going on. From her infighting family, to keeping up with her infirm grandma, to job, and everything else, she's decided that a new life is in order. When the aliens bring one of the matching offices to her town, she makes her appointment. But, after finding 2 of her angel mates she gets kidnapped. Wouldn't you just know?

Betty has a lot going on. From her infighting family, to keeping up with her infirm grandma, to job, and everything else, she's decided that a new life is in order. When the aliens bring one of the matching offices to her town, she makes her appointment. But, after finding 2 of her angel mates she gets kidnapped. Wouldn't you just know?

I am torn about this whole universe. On one hand: all the interesting species,the abilities, the networks, the heavy point of consent woven throughout everything. On the other: all the species gets confusing and keeps adding new, the lack of bonding outside of sex, and while I commend the rescue of the children one lady adopts almost a hundred in 1 go. Even with AI minions and a handful of mates that's a lot of kids. Kids with special needs, too. Emotionally traumatized, stunted and exhausted from all they've endured. I commend taking on so many topics at once: the environment, women's rights, LGBTQIA rights, children's rights and needs, human trafficking, alien trafficking, charities, and decrying inhumane traditions, but these books are so packed that the main characters barely interact before the book ends. Each one needs to be at least a trilogy to make this work. The matching process and meet up, the number of mates and where they'll live- decided after more than 1 social interaction, the rescues and resettling- to include the mating, meeting the AIs and minions and all the new home comes with, the learning of new forms and abilities, and then, after everyone is closer adding in friends and family expansions. Like I said, I love the concept of this series. I keep coming back. I just always feel a little sad at the end because these beautiful ideas don't feel fully fleshed out. I want to see them in their day to day lives. I want more than a 3 sentence "wow, I'm a dragon" or "wow, I have wings". And I have so many questions-
*Women with female mates, do their female mates have other mates? How will those families mesh?
*How flexible are these citadels? If families can have up to 30 kids in a single pregnancy, families literally grow exponentially. And when those kids grow up (some ages for adulthood aren't given because the species doesn't understand days/months/years) and they collect up to 20+ mates... Yeah.
*Food production seemed like it would be a slow thing. But they're feeding thousands. Those with nanites shouldn't have any alien food reactions, but human females (and HOs) without them might.
*Will minions ever evolve? They're AIs, like the citadel AIs and ship AIs. It seems mean to leave them stunted and I can't see the evolved and independent AIs accepting it for long.
*They talk about earth environment badly, but by just plowing in fields of non native plants and adding herds of non native animals, they're upsetting the ecosystem themselves. Native birds transfer seeds, pollinators would do the same as they visit blooms of native and non native species, and invasive plants playa huge part in destroying ecosystems. Look at what kudzu has done to the South Eastern US's forests. And introducing predators to cull deer herds hasn't worked well, either.
*Their biodegradable water bottles are great, but they are still going to sit around as trash until they decompose. They don't shred, where they could be used as nesting materials, or simply dissolve once emptied. Humans are very much "single use" when it comes to consumerism. Also, is it native plant species that the cellulose comes from? If it's going to join the ecosystem it probably should be. Or, how about make them plastic, but inner layer is a plastic eating bacteria that once pressure released (as in the bottle is drained, no more pressure) is released and not only breaks down that bottle but seeks out other platsics and decomposes them. Becomes inert after its lifecycle.
*Did grandma not feel sad at all to be leaving her children and grandkids behind? We know Betty was tired enough of all of them, but even if you don't like your family much, you can still love them.
*Grandma's character was so fun, it's sad she's not getting her own book. All these really interesting and fun characters, and they're in the background.

There's just so much to explore in this new universe and I feel like we're looking through a tiny peephole in a very large door. I really do love the ideas the author has presented. I just feel rushed through them instead of savoring all the amazing things presented. Like a sumptuous 7 course dinner, but all you get is teeny portions where you get 1 bite before the plate is snatched away to be handed another. ...more
