Academy of Assassins (Academy of Assassins, #1) in Reverse Harem Readers

I read from book 1 until 30% of book 3 and DNF there.

I was looking for a slow-burn reverse harem romance, and this was on the list. Unfortunately, it seems to be more of a no-burn, no development romance.

+ Heroine could kick ass
+ There was chemistry with SOME of the guys, notably Kincade
+ Story was somewhat interesting in the first book. Started getting a bit boring in book 2.

- Heroine was a little too much of a Mary Sue
- Heroine kept making these incredibly senseless, WRONG pivotal decisions I read from book 1 until 30% of book 3 and DNF there.

- The biggest grievance I have here is the lack of development on the relationship front. It's meant to be a reverse harem, and she does collect them as mates right off, but... guess what? Nothing ever happens. She doesn't get to know them, she doesn't have private moments with them, she doesn't have sex (we're like a bunch of monks here) with them. There's zero relationship development. There's a tiny handful of stolen moments where ooohh, shivers! she kissed one guy! That's it.

We're TOLD that she values them so much blah blah they're her guys, but she never bothers to find out anything about their races or how it works, and we're never shown them building any sort of friendship, or WHY exactly they feel such a connection to each other. We're just TOLD it is and apparently that insta-connection is good enough to substitute for the usual relationship development.

I realized at 30% of book 3 that if if there still wasn't any relationship development by then, there never was going to be. Also, she decided to make another idiotic pivotal decision there, which precipitated my abandoning the book.

P. S. While we're at it, what is up with the 'Academy of Assassins' title and series name? There is not a single assassin in sight. They are hunters and witches in the book, not "assassins". It feels like clickbait. Buybait? ...more

Slow burn at its best

Love this series, Morgan is the best! And all the guys are too good. Her powers are growing and just beginning to develop, I can't wait to see where she goes from here and how her relationships develop with the guys. ...more
