It's hard to imagine reading a new book by Laurie Halse Anderson and seeing that she's becoming an even more impressive writer, but there it is.

The power of this story will blow you away.

If I were an English teacher at a school that actually allowed some flexibility with the reading list, I would make Wintergirls mandatory reading. Not just because all of my students would absolutely love it, be moved by it, and/or have their lives changed by it. This book reaches out to every person who has b

Summary:

One contest.

Two girls.

A downfall into the messy seas of anorexia.

A fight to be skinny.

Lia and her best friend Cassie make a vow when they are twelve to be the skinniest girls in their class and this has come to pass. Because of years of struggling with their weight issues/eating disorders, Cassie has developed a severe case of bulimia, so severe in fact, that it takes her life. Lia, on the other hand, lives on, but with a severe case of anorexia... among other things. When Cassie is found dead, alone i ...more

Also reviewed, with more detail and clarity on my blog, Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing.

This book is intense. I love LHA's writing. You really feel that you are living through the experiences of the characters, and that is definitely not always pleasant. This book really made me glad I never struggled with anything like this growing up. My heart just hurt for Lia all the time. I was also impressed with how well I felt LHA handled the topic of eating disorders. I have my BS in Psychology, an

A deep exploration into the mind of an anorexic or anybody dealing with disordered eating habits, but still reads like a wondeful story.
I FORCED myself not to cry. It was absolutely awesome but when is she not?

I read this book in two days! It was great! It's a young adult novel about anorexia and cutting so it's hard to read, but it's a page-turner. ...more
